Second extract: Portrait of the impressive Nafisa Ali
“Eight p.m., the weather is cold in New Delhi this month of January. Nafisa Ali is waiting for me at her home in front of hot rum toddy as her five English bulldogs bark a fierce greeting. Nafisa holds a number of impressive titles: social activist, national swimming champion, Miss World 1977, jockey in 1979, and Bollywood actress. I find myself humbled before this great woman, now a grandmother and still a vision of beauty, despite the years. She did it all before becoming an active member of Action India, one of the goals of which is to promote awareness of AIDS contamination risk.
She is also the chair of the Children’s Film Society of India. Her struggle is now focussed on helping the children and women of her native India. And she continues to show her indignation at the inequalities between men and women which, according to her, is growing at an alarming rate.”
