Igniting a passion for sustainability across schools in the Netherlands

As the world combats climate change, it’s important that we bring the younger generations into the conversation. In the Netherlands, ‘Day of sustainability education’ helps lay the foundations of awareness and responsibility needed to safeguard the future of our planet.

What’s the issue?

As the world continues to combat climate change, teaching sustainability to children is vital, as it helps lay the foundations of awareness and responsibility needed to safeguard the future of our planet. It equips them with the knowledge and values to make eco-conscious choices, fostering a generation capable of addressing environment challenges and promoting a more sustainable world.

How are we addressing it?

Following a successful pilot event in 2022, our teams in the Netherlands decided to once again organise a ‘Day of sustainability education’ on 10 October 2023, expanding the reach of the project by working with five primary schools spread across the country.

In total, colleagues from different offices across the Netherlands taught nearly 1,000 students about sustainable energy. The younger grades generated their own energy using generators and homemade windmills.

In the older grades, some students worked collectively to research energy guzzlers (devices that consume a lot of energy), while other students created campaign videos to show their peers how they can contribute to a sustainable future.

What’s the lasting impact?

This day highlights the importance for companies and educational institutions to join forces to raise awareness among youth about various societal challenges, such as energy conservation and sustainability. This partnership promises to have an impact not only within the classrooms but also in the local communities where positive change is ignited. Together, we are building a more sustainable future for all of us.

Commenting on the event, Volkan Anil, Partner Global Compliance & International Outsourcing at Forvis Mazars in the Netherlands said:

"I've gained so much positive energy from today that I can generate my own! Hopefully, a day like this, where education and the business world work together, inspires. We are proud that, after a successful first edition last year, we expanded this day to five locations in the Netherlands."
